REM: World’s biggest wind farm drops green hydrogen component

Dogger Bank D, the 2-GW offshore wind farm proposed off northern England, originally intended for green hydrogen production, is now shifting towards supplying electricity to the UK national grid.

This strategic shift comes as the joint developers, Scotland’s SSE and Norway’s Equinor and Vårgrønn, reassess their plans in light of logistical and economic considerations.

Initially, there were ambitious plans to harness the power generated by the fourth phase of the Dogger Bank wind farm to establish the UK’s largest green hydrogen production facility. However, recent developments have led the developers to abandon this vision in favour of more conventional electricity generation.

The decision to forego green hydrogen production was made following the confirmation of an onshore grid connection, rendering the original plan economically unfeasible. Despite having awarded contracts for feasibility studies to several firms in December, the developers have opted to scrap the green hydrogen project altogether.
