DMEA: Egypt detains LPG tanker after grounding

Egyptian authorities have detained a Liberian-registered gas carrier after the vessel grounded itself in an environmentally sensitive location in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Salvage teams were able to re-float the ship and move it to a secure anchorage near Safaga around April 13, according to VesselFinder.

Named Claudia Gas, the 34 year old 16,000 dwt LPG tanker had completed offloading at Aqaba in Jordan and was on it was to Russia when a blackout occurred on April 12, grounding that evening in the Ras Nasrani area near the Egyptian tourist town of Sharm El Sheikh.

The country’s Environmental Ministry put various resources on alert for a possible spill, however, reports have emerged that the vessel was refloated with no signs of a leak due to the gas tanks being empty.
